u.lab 1x: Ego-to-Eco framework for societal transformation

Aug 22, 2019

On September 12th, 2019 the Presencing Institute will launch an updated, essentialized version of our flagship u.lab 1x course.

For first-time and return participants alike, this year’s 1x experience will offer a timely, accessible and practical introduction to Theory U and the Ego-to-Eco framework for societal transformation. Whether your goal is to further catalyze a global movement responding to climate change, effect change in your organization or evolve your own approach to leadership, u.lab will help you develop innovative approaches to leadership challenges for which past experience may not be a helpful guide for what to do next. U.lab will build your capacity to lead from the emerging future.

Overview of the main updates to u.lab for 2019:

  • Tracks: we will offer monthly issue-specific support structures (virtual communities of practice) around the following topics: (1) Climate action, (2) Youth, (3) Business, (4) Higher Education and (5) Government. For more information about these communities of practice, please click here.
  • An introduction to the Ego-to-Eco framework for societal transformation
  • In addition to a focus on presencing (a process of opening the mind, heart and will in the face of disruptive challenges), a greater focus on absencing (the process of closing down in the face of disruption).
  • Updated real-world examples
  • Essentialized content: each module will focus on one of the five stages of the U.
  • Learn and practice at a pace that suits you: all pre-recorded material released September 19th. We’ll still maintain monthly live sessions. This way, you can more easily engage with the material at your own pace, while still going through the process with a global cohort.
  • Updated u.lab Sourcebook for Issue-focused participants: for those who want to adapt the core u.lab frameworks and practices to a particular focus area the new sourcebook will be a valuable resource.

As always, you can engage with u.lab 1x in multiple ways:

  • Browse: use it to familiarize yourself with the Theory U concepts
  • Leadership Development: use it to build your own leadership capacity; learn how to shift the inner place from where you operate.
  • Prototype: develop an emerging idea into a prototyping project or initiative.
  • From Prototype to Ecosystem Activation: Those who want to go deeper into prototyping now have access to an annual cycle that includes both u.lab 1x (Sept-Dec) and u.lab 2x (Feb-May). Compared to previous years, this means there is less pressure to produce a full scale prototype in the three-month u.lab 1x course. We hope the updated combination of the above u.lab core elements will help you to further develop and amplify what earlier research has shown to be one of the most significant outcomes of participating in u.lab: the strengthening of individual and collective agency (Pomeroy).
